Our History

Established amidst the vibrant backdrop of the Cotton Festival on Saturday, August 26th, 1967, the Kununurra Amateur Race Club emerged as a pivotal aspect of the festivities. This celebration extended over three days, offering an eclectic mix of activities including a festival ball, sports day, feature movie screenings, and a field day at the Kimberley Research Station. However, it was the inaugural races that truly captured the community's imagination.

The first races showcased a thrilling array of events, ranging from the Argyle Maiden Hack Race to the Auvergne Ladies Race. Among them were the Rosewood Maiden Handicap, Jumbo Stakes, Ladies Bracelet, Carlton Handicap, and many more, each adding its own dash of excitement to the proceedings. These races quickly garnered attention and support, thanks in part to the generosity of the first sponsors, including TASCO Pty Ltd, B.W Cole, and the Commonwealth Banking Corporation, among others.

As the years passed, the Kununurra Races continued to flourish, becoming an integral part of the local calendar. In 1969, feature articles such as 'Racing – Community Style' and 'Where Cotton Men Meet' highlighted the event's significance, solidifying its place in the community's collective consciousness. By 1973, recognizing its growing influence and importance, the Kununurra Amateur Race Club became an Incorporated Association, further cementing its status as a cherished tradition.

Today, the Kununurra Races remain a beloved fixture, bringing together residents and visitors alike in celebration of sport, community, and the rich cultural tapestry of the region. From its humble beginnings as part of the Cotton Festival to its current incarnation as a cornerstone event, the races continue to embody the spirit of camaraderie and tradition that defines Kununurra.
